[Coretta My Life, My Love, My Legacy] "reveals never-before-told aspects of Mrs. King’s life....We learn of the brilliant mind and courageous spirit behind the enigmatic figure†(Essence).
Born in 1927 to daringly enterprising parents in the Deep South, Coretta Scott had always felt called to a special purpose. While enrolled as one of the first black scholarship students recruited to Antioch College, she became politically and socially active and committed to the peace movement. As a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music, determined to pursue her own career as a concert singer, she met Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister insistent that his wife stay home with the children. But, in love and devoted to shared Christian beliefs as well as shared racial and economic justice goals, she married Dr. King, and events promptly thrust her into a maelstrom of history throughout which she was a strategic partner, a standard-bearer, and so much more.
As a widow and single mother of four, she worked tirelessly to found and develop the King Center as a citadel for world peace; lobbied for fifteen years for a U.S. national holiday in honor of her husband; championed women’s, workers’, and gay rights; and was a powerful international voice for nonviolence, freedom, and human dignity.
"Distinctly...particularly absorbing" (Patricia J. Williams, The New York Times Book Review), Coretta’s is a love story, a family saga, and the memoir of an extraordinary black woman in twentieth-century America―a brave leader who, in the face of terrorism and violent hatred, stood committed, proud, forgiving, nonviolent, and hopeful every day of her life.

"A worthy and revealing memoir - things I did not know of her life and her influence that I was glad to learn - it is not easy being the wife of a person constantly on the move and in the news and martyred."

- I had a strong inclination this memoir was going to be a powerful recording of history, and it was. There was more direct, genuine information contained in this tome than expected. I enjoyed reading between the lines, nothing designed to delude readers, but more so due to my personal habit of analyzing and absorbing details in fragments. It was innocuous things such as valuing ‘land ownership’, in juxtapose to the historical events of how land was initially acquired in America.
Overall, there was a lot to absorb and take from this memoir, again, far more than expected. The tireless work melded into living this experience, and now buttressed in print, for sure is a valuable recording of history. Highly recommended! - Took you to the place of "realism" especially from the spouse's perspective. Shows how the Sharpton, Jackson and the like have diverted from the real message of the Great Martin Luther King. Non violent, strive for a better life by earning it and taking the resources offered to obtain success. Education, and to surround yourself with positive people, humility and trust in the Lord! Help one another regardless of color, creed or gender!
- Oh my goodness, i am so very glad and overwhelming Happy to have read this nook. I have read numerous books from and about Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the civil Rights movement, but seen Through The Eyes of Coretta has been so enlightening. She was truly a remarkable woman in her own right. I have a newfound respect and love for her. I would encourage anyone who's considering reading another book about the movement to definitely put this on their bucket list. It's just so unfortunate that her accomplishments have gone nearly unnoticed in terms of the impact she's had in so many areas.
- Dr. Barbara Reynolds did a magnificent job of weaving source material, historical documents and her personal interviews with Mrs. Coretta Scott King into a powerful narrative of how God used a woman of humble beginnings into one of the most influential leaders America has produced.
The power of this biography is the delivery of Mrs. King's voice to the powerful influence she and other women yielded in shaping civil rights and human rights into a socially transformative series of events for America and the world. Born in 1953, I am indebted to the sacrifices that Mrs. King made for all of us present day beneficiaries.
Thank you, Rev. Dr. Reynolds. This book is absolutely elegant! Just like it's subject! - I was surprised how great this was.
I could not put it down. I also cried when his little daughter asked if dad was going to be "hungry"
while she rode in his funeral plane.
Great stories about the "Jim crow" south that
she grew up in. Her story is finally told.
Guitar Gregg - I really gained a lot from this autobiography and have a much clearer picture into the lives of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr. Eye-opening and thought-provoking, and especially appropriate reading during the current racial unrest in this country. Very highly recommend!
- A worthy and revealing memoir - things I did not know of her life and her influence that I was glad to learn - it is not easy being the wife of a person constantly on the move and in the news and martyred.
- I rented this book first from my local library. It was so profound to me that i then turned around and bought it. This book is amazingly written and shows the strength of a woman that i can’t even easily fathom. I learned so much history as well from this book.
